Ford Takes Electric SUVs to New Heights: 2024 Mustang Mach-E Rally Breaks Ground with Unprecedented Torque and Aggressive Pricing

Ford has officially announced its first off-road-ready electric vehicle, the 2024 Mustang Mach-E Rally. Building on the success of the Mach-E GT Performance, which boasts 480 horsepower and 634 lb-ft of torque, Ford’s latest iteration promises even more impressive performance figures: at least 480 horsepower and a staggering 650 lb-ft of torque from a modified version of the same powertrain.

Electrifying Off-Road Capability

Ford has been experimenting with EVs in various configurations for some time now. Donna Dickson, chief engineer for Mustang Mach-E, reveals that there were "really no competitors in this space," hinting at the innovation and creativity that went into developing this new ride. Taking it from concept to reality took less than 16 months, with Ford consulting rally cross drivers within the company to inform its design.

When working on the Mach-E Rally, Dickson’s team aimed to make it a true off-road beast by incorporating several key features: underbody protective shielding for the front and rear motors, an aero spoiler, and a black-painted steel roof to lower the center of gravity. "We wanted to push the limits of what’s possible," Dickson explains.

Michelin Tires and High-Tech Braking System

To enhance its off-road performance, Ford selected Michelin CrossClimate2 tires for their extra sidewall and better loose-surface grip. The 19-inch gloss white alloy wheels are shod in these capable tires, working together to provide a smooth ride both on- and off-pavement.

The Rally also features red-painted Brembo calipers biting down onto 385mm front brake rotors for improved stopping power, critical when tackling rough terrain. The unique front splitter improves the approach angle, while new fog lamps integrated into the fascia enhance visibility.

Key Features of the Mach-E Rally:

• MagneRide shocks with specially-tuned springs
• 20mm lift over the standard car
• Aggressive off-road suspension tuning
• Protective underbody shielding for front and rear motors
• Aero spoiler to reduce uplift and improve stability

New RallySport Drive Mode

To fully unleash its potential, Ford has developed a new feature: RallySport Drive Mode. This game-changing mode allows drivers to adjust traction control, throttle response, and damping for a thrilling ride on any surface. The advanced Unbridled mode (Ford’s version of Sport) will serve as the base and provide more stability on slippery roads.

Additionally, BlueCruise 1.3 — Ford’s hands-off driver assistance system – is fully supported at launch with all necessary hardware pre-installed on the Mach-E Rally.

Performance Numbers:

While exact range numbers have yet to be finalized, Ford’s expectations suggest an EPA rating of around 250 miles per charge. Moreover, they anticipate that upgrading DC fast charging speed should enable a 10-80% recharge in under 36 minutes – about seven minutes faster than its predecessors.

Colors and Customization Options

When it comes to personalizing their electric off-road companion, Mach-E Rally owners will be spoiled for choice with six colors on the menu: Grabber Blue, Shadow Black, Eruption Green, Grabber Yellow, Star White, and Glacier Gray. All six come with two standard racing stripes.

To protect paintwork from being easily damaged, Ford is including a protective film on doors and fender arches as an added bonus.

Pricing Aggressively to Match Its Capabilities

Unlike many electric vehicles that tend to be pricey, the Mustang Mach-E Rally will neither be outlandishly expensive nor produced in limited numbers. "We definitely see a departure from pavement-based driving into the dirt road’s domain," notes Michael Sego, Group Marketing Manager for Mustang Mach-E. Pricing reflects this bold move with an estimated MSRP around $65,000 (before any applicable incentives).

Availability

In early 2024, Ford plans to start production on the Mach-E Rally in both North America and Europe, where it will enjoy access to a wide range of off-pavement adventures.

The Mustang Mach-E lineup is expected to expand further throughout this year with more innovations and features yet to be revealed.
