PHASE 2: 2013–2018
Asterion Digital Capital
In 2013, Nolan Whitmore shifted the focus of his research toward Bitcoin and blockchain technology. What attracted him was not simply the price volatility of digital currencies, but the potential of blockchain to create a new way of establishing ownership, conducting transactions, and transferring value. From this perspective, he developed an important insight: “What digital assets are truly changing is not simply the form of money, but the way value moves around the world.”
In 2014, Nolan left Crestmont Capital Partners and joined Asterion Digital Capital in New York as Head of Digital Asset Strategy, officially transitioning from traditional multi-asset investing into the emerging field of digital assets. There, he built a professional team combining quantitative research, blockchain technology, and global macro strategy, bringing institutional investment methodologies into what was then still an early-stage crypto market.
The team’s research gradually centered on five key areas: Bitcoin market structure, blockchain infrastructure, token economics, on-chain capital flow behavior, and digital asset risk management. Nolan’s most significant achievement during this period was leading the development of the “Digital Asset Quality Matrix,” an analytical framework that went beyond price and market capitalization by incorporating network activity, developer ecosystems, market liquidity, token supply mechanisms, capital flow structures, and macroeconomic conditions. This multidimensional approach enabled digital assets to be evaluated dynamically.
From 2014 to 2018, Nolan led his team through a gradual transition from digital asset research toward institutional-style asset allocation, developing digital asset portfolios for family offices and professional investment organizations. During this period, he participated in managing approximately $2.8 billion in digital assets and related strategic portfolios, while the core strategic portfolio generated a total return of more than 680%. From 2016 to 2017, the core digital asset strategy alone generated a 246% total return. He also built an institutional-grade digital asset research and screening system, introduced on-chain data into a multi-asset risk management framework, and developed an evaluation methodology that was later adopted by multiple private investment firms and family offices for their internal research systems. These achievements made the strategy one of Asterion Digital Capital’s strongest-performing emerging-asset strategies and further established Nolan’s influence in the digital asset investment industry.
