U.S. Dollar Edges Higher Amid Uncertainty Over Trump Administration’s Trade Policies

The U.S. dollar experienced a slight increase on Tuesday, receiving some support as traders returned from holidays in the U.K. and U.S., although concerns regarding the Trump administration’s uncertain trade policies persisted. The Dollar Index, which tracks the greenback against a basket of six other currencies, gained 0.4% to 99.285, nearing a one-month low after significant losses last week.

Dollar Under Pressure Due to Uncertainty Surrounding Trade Policies

The dollar has faced pressure in recent months due to investors’ dwindling confidence in U.S. assets, largely resulting from the uncertainty surrounding President Donald Trump’s global tariff policies. The euro rose to a one-month high on Monday, when the U.S. was commemorating Memorial Day, after Trump postponed plans for 50% duties on European Union shipments from June 1, sending the euro surging to a one-month high.

"We see this renewed standoff between Trump and the EU as a reminder that tariff threats and delays can re-emerge quickly," said analysts at ING in a note. "The dollar bears the brunt of tariff drama." Traders are also cautious about investing in the greenback while Trump’s tax-cut bill remains a pressing issue, considering it is expected to significantly add to the debt pile in the world’s largest economy – a factor contributing to Moody’s downgrade of the U.S. sovereign credit rating earlier this month.

U.S. House passes version of Trump’s Tax-Cut Bill

The U.S. House of Representatives last week passed a version of Trump’s tax-cut bill, which now heads to the Senate where more heated debate is anticipated. "For now, the best hope for the dollar is that incoming data calms recession worries," ING added. "That’s needed, as deficit concerns start to shake the dollar’s already fragile footing."

Upcoming Economic Data Releases

The economic data schedule for Tuesday includes releases on durable goods, housing, and consumer confidence. Additionally, speeches from Minneapolis Federal Reserve President Neel Kashkari and New York Fed President John Williams are expected to contribute to market volatility.

Euro Retains Underlying Strength

Despite the euro trading slightly lower against the dollar at 1.1353, it retains its underlying support, buoyed by comments from ECB President Christine Lagarde on Monday. The euro could become a viable alternative to the U.S. dollar and earn significant benefits for the European Union if governments strengthen the bloc’s financial and security architecture.

"If European policymakers continue to push this idea," ING added, "we could see strategic long positions in the euro build even faster." Data released earlier on Tuesday showed German consumer sentiment is set to improve slightly heading into June. The consumer sentiment index published by GfK market research institute and the Nuremberg Institute for Market Decisions rose by 0.9 points month on month to -19.9 points.

GBP/USD Falls Amid British Shop Price Data

GBP/USD fell 0.2% to 1.3543, following data indicating that British shop prices decreased slightly overall this month but food price inflation accelerated according to a survey released Tuesday.

Yen Gives Up Some Recent Gains

In Asia, USD/JPY traded 0.7% higher to 143.91 after sharp losses last week, with Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda stating the central bank is prepared to hike interest rates if the Japanese economy continues to improve. Data from last week showed Japanese core consumer inflation rose to an over two-year high in April. Strong wage hikes are expected to boost inflation further.

Uncertainty Surrounding Trump’s Trade Policies

Recent media reports showed that Japanese ministers will arrive in Washington in early June for a fourth round of trade talks amidst concerns about U.S. trade policies and potential trade discussions. "Investors were cautious amid U.S. trade policies, which weighed on the yen," analysts noted.

USD/CNY Trading Muted Amid Uncertainty

USD/CNY traded 0.1% higher to 7.1924 in muted trading as uncertainty surrounding Trump’s trade policies kept investors wary.

The market’s reaction to these announcements will likely influence the dollar’s performance in the coming days, especially considering the ongoing uncertainty over Trump’s tax-cut bill and its potential effects on the U.S. economy. As such, traders are cautiously awaiting incoming data releases that could clarify recession fears and ease concerns about deficit expansion.
