EUR/USD Rises on Continued USD Weakness Amid Debt Concerns

The EUR/USD currency pair has seen a significant upward trend in recent days, with the Euro gaining against the US dollar as concerns over the US debt continue to mount. The US dollar, which had been struggling for several weeks due to its weakening position, has fallen further after Moody’s downgraded the US sovereign credit rating by one notch to Aa1, citing concerns over the country’s rising debt burden.

In a major blow to the US dollar, Moody’s stated that it believes the mounting debt of the United States is unsustainable and will have significant implications for the global economy. This downgrade has led to a further selloff in the US currency, causing it to plummet against several major currencies, including the Euro, Pound Sterling, and Japanese Yen.

The EUR/USD exchange rate has now broken through the 1.1250 level, marking its second consecutive session of gains as investors flock to the safety of the Euro amidst concerns over the stability of the US economy. The continued weakness in the US dollar is a major factor contributing to this trend, with many market analysts predicting further depreciation for the USD in the coming quarters.

One of the key factors driving the decline of the US dollar is its skyrocketing debt pile, which has already reached an alarming figure of $36 trillion. With President Trump’s recent massive tax cut bill passing through Congress, concerns over the country’s fiscal position are now more pressing than ever. The Trump administration’s plan to add between $3 and $5 trillion to the national debt has sent shockwaves throughout the global economy, with many experts warning that this will have severe implications for interest rates, inflation, and economic growth.

Despite the lack of significant US economic data in recent days, Fed speakers will be under intense scrutiny as they attempt to reassure investors about the Federal Reserve’s stance on interest rates. While the Fed has not yet cut interest rates this year, there is growing speculation that it may follow a more dovish stance due to rising concerns over inflation, which are being fueled by higher tariffs on imported goods.

Yesterday, Atlanta Federal Reserve President Raphael Bostic cautioned that the US central bank may only be able to cut interest rates by 25 basis points for the remainder of the year, citing growing concerns about rising inflation. This warning comes as many market analysts believe that the Fed’s attempts to keep interest rates low may ultimately fail to boost economic growth, instead potentially exacerbating inflationary pressures.

EUR/USD Forecast – Technical Analysis

Following a brief drop below its multi-month rising channel, the EUR/USD currency pair has found support at the 50 Simple Moving Average (SMA) and rebounded higher. The exchange rate is now trading above 1.1270, with investors looking to drive prices even higher towards key resistance levels of 1.1350.

Should EUR/USD manage to break through these barriers, it could trigger a more significant price increase, potentially resulting in further gains for the Euro against the US dollar over the coming sessions. Conversely, any signs of weakness or rejection at the key 1.1280 resistance level could pave the way for additional downward pressure on EUR/USD.

In the event that this trend proves strong enough to break through major technical support levels, it is possible that prices may drop as low as the 50 SMA located near its current value of 1.1120.

FTSE Rises, Boosted by Earnings

The UK’s benchmark stock index has witnessed its fourth consecutive day of gains, buoyed by encouraging earnings reports and impressive performances from several major listed companies.

One major beneficiary of this sector-wide optimism was the technical products and services distributor, Diploma, which lifted its revenue growth guidance due to strong performance across three key divisions. The company saw a substantial surge in share price following this announcement, rising over 15% to propel it forward at the top of the FTSE 100.

Meanwhile, High Street bakery chain Greggs posted improving trading conditions and stronger revenue growth for the first 20 weeks of the year, with like-for-like sales climbing by 2.9%. These positive results saw the company’s share price increase by nearly 8%.

In a contrasting outcome, telecom giant Vodafone reported top-line performance in line with estimates but experienced regional disappointments, particularly in Germany.

FTSE Forecast – Technical Analysis

With a peak of 8720 and ongoing support from the RSI remaining above 50, investors are optimistic about further growth for the FTSE as it aims to reach the record high at 8900. However, strong resistance between 8615, where it hit 78.6% Fibonacci retracement of the highs and lows since March, may challenge this momentum.
