Crypto Miners Secure Energy Access Amid Bitcoin, AI Surge

January 18, 2026

The world of digital currencies is undergoing a surprising shift, with significant implications for the future of finance. At the forefront of this transformation is the United States, which is now aggressively pursuing a strategy to become the global leader in cryptocurrency – a move fueled by unusual support from the White House. This shift has sparked debate about the role of government in the decentralized world of digital assets, and the surprising ways in which powerful players are positioning themselves within this evolving landscape.

Several high-profile figures are contributing to this strategic realignment. Donald Trump and his family have established a cryptocurrency business called World Liberty Financial and a meme coin, while older sons co-founded a publicly-traded bitcoin mining firm called American Bitcoin (ABTC). Kevin O’Leary, star of Shark Tank, is also a crypto investor and outspoken advocate, and in a recent conversation with Moneywise, he discussed his stake in Bitcoin mining firm Bitzero, which recently began trading on the Canadian Securities Exchange. Simultaneously, the focus has turned to securing access to affordable energy, a key factor proving pivotal in this strategy.

A critical element of this development is the access to cheap power. Eric Trump, son of the former president, highlighted the Trump administration’s energy policies and the availability of energy at the lowest costs in the country, particularly from West Texas. “We believe we have the cheapest energy anywhere in the country,” he stated during a discussion with Yahoo Finance. This strategic advantage is central to the ambitions of American Bitcoin and other mining operations. O’Leary’s investment in Bitzero reflects a similar belief. “What’s your power coming in at? It’s over 8 cents kWh? No thanks,” he commented, emphasizing the crucial role of energy costs in the profitability of cryptocurrency mining.

The industry’s shift towards sustainable energy is also notable. Bitzero, founded in 2021 and operating data centers in Norway, Finland and the U.S., champions “100% renewable energy.” Despite its name, CleanSpark focuses on “low-carbon power” rather than strictly renewable sources, while IREN explicitly uses renewable energy at its data centers. This trend represents a broader industry movement, as evidenced by a global survey by the Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance, which shows miners predominantly using sustainable electricity – 52.4% of the total uses renewable energy, 42.6% is provided by nuclear sources and 9.8% by natural gas. Natural gas, a cleaner fossil fuel option, has replaced coal as the predominant energy source for cryptocurrency mining.

The strategic considerations surrounding energy supply are particularly relevant given recent global shortages. O’Leary noted a critical shortage of power, stating, “There is no power on the grid anymore.” He pointed out that the inability to establish data mining or AI data centers without reasonable energy rates makes it nearly impossible. This scarcity has led Canada to become a primary source of power for cryptocurrency operations in the U.S.

Investment opportunities within the cryptocurrency mining sector are increasingly becoming attractive. Publicly-traded firms like Riot Blockchain (RIOT), IREN (IREN), Marathon Digital Holdings (MARA), Cipher Mining (CIFR), CleanSpark (CLSK), Bitdeer (BTDR) and TeraWulf (WULF) are proving to be viable options. Analysts suggest cautious optimism, highlighting the potential for repurposing mining capacity for AI and other high-performance computing applications. JPMorgan analysts recently issued “overweight” ratings for Cipher Mining and CleanSpark, citing their recent contracts and CleanSpark’s recent acquisition which provides 200 MW of potential IT capacity. Despite volatility in the broader market – with Bitcoin Mining Stock reporting a collapse from over $90 billion to around $55 billion – there is a growing belief that miners will adapt to new demands.

However, risks remain. The total Bitcoin market cap for miners has plummeted, and there is constant exposure to price fluctuations. Despite this, firms like IREN and CleanSpark are actively pursuing innovative strategies to secure their positions in this evolving market.
