Amazon Braket Gains 54-Qubit IQM Processor

April 23, 2023

Investing.com – Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) Braket has expanded its quantum computing hardware options with the broad rollout of IQM’s new 54‑qubit superconducting quantum processing unit (QPU) named Emerald.

This new processor joins IQM’s 20‑qubit Garnet device on the Amazon Braket platform, with both quantum processors accessible through the Europe region (Stockholm). This addition provides customers with more options to select the quantum hardware best suited to their specific research and algorithmic needs.

Emerald uses IQM’s Crystal 54 architecture, featuring superconducting transmon qubits arranged in a square lattice with tunable couplers to connect them. This high interconnectivity enables efficient algorithm mapping and naturally supports surface‑code error correction for fault‑tolerant quantum computing in the future.

Initial performance data shows the processor achieves an average single‑qubit gate fidelity of 99.93% and an average two‑qubit gate fidelity of 99.5%. The device supports arbitrary X and Y rotations as natural single‑qubit gates and uses the CZ gate as its natural two‑qubit operation.

Both IQM quantum processors are available 19 hours per day, allowing customers worldwide to run quantum workloads regardless of time zone. QPUs located in the EU enable customers to meet European data‑residency requirements while working with hybrid quantum‑classical computing capabilities.

Amazon Braket provides a unified programming interface to access quantum hardware, allowing customers to build and run quantum programs using the Braket SDK or other frameworks such as Qiskit, Pennylane, and NVIDIA CUDA‑Q.

Emerald’s 54‑qubit capacity enables exploring quantum algorithms that require significant qubit resources, including larger entangled states and more complex quantum circuits. The processor also supports Amazon Braket’s dynamic‑circuit testing capability, allowing qubit measurements between circuit calls and conditional operations.

Following this announcement, shares of Quantum Computing Inc (NASDAQ: QUBT) fell 5.5% and D Wave Quantum Inc (NYSE: QBTS) saw its rise drop to 2.3%, while Amazon shares rose 1%.
