Bitcoin and Ethereum face a significant downturn as market uncertainty intensifies, leading to shifts in predictive odds regarding their future performance. Myriad Markets, a proprietary platform utilized for gauging market sentiment, is highlighting a notable increase in bearish predictions for both Bitcoin and Ethereum, with a particular focus on the likelihood of no Federal Reserve rate cuts during the upcoming December meetings. This assessment underscores a growing reluctance among market participants to anticipate any further downward adjustments by the Fed.
Bitcoin’s Plunge and Diminished Rate Cut Hopes
Bitcoin has experienced a notable decline, sliding past $87,000 for the first time since April, representing a more than 30% drop from its all-time high exceeding $126,000 established just weeks prior. This downturn coincides with reduced optimism regarding a potential December rate cut by the Federal Reserve. Myriad Markets currently assigns an 80% probability for Bitcoin to fall to $85,000, a substantial decrease from previously held predictions. This represents a 34% slide over the past week, with the cryptocurrency just 2.4% away from the $85,000 mark. The platform’s odds reflect the current market sentiment, acknowledging a significant shift from bullish to bearish forecasts. The potential upside, if Bitcoin were to rally to $115,000, stands at just 22%, while a rise to $85,000 would yield a modest gain of approximately 31% for holders of spot Bitcoin.
Ethereum Faces a Similar Downtrend
Ethereum mirrors Bitcoin’s struggles, experiencing a 10% decrease during the current week and a 27% drop over the month. The second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization is currently trading below $3,000 — a level not seen since July. Driven by this downward trend, Myriad Markets now favors Ethereum’s dip to $2,500, assigning a 70% probability to this outcome. Despite a brief rally to $4,000 on Wednesday morning, the market’s predictive outlook has shifted. Ethereum has fallen approximately 42% from its all-time high of $4,946, set in August. The platform’s data confirms the increasing pessimism surrounding the cryptocurrency.
Market Reassessment and Liquidations
The overall shift in market probabilities has been dramatic, jumping nearly 30% over the last week. BitMine’s Tom Lee continues to advocate for an Ethereum “supercycle,” while his leading Ethereum treasury firm continues to acquire Ethereum’s circulating supply. However, this stance is not being mirrored by the broader market. Several factors contribute to this recalibration. The volatility of Ethereum whales, who are more inclined to sell their holdings compared to Bitcoin holders, plays a significant role. Furthermore, lingering uncertainty surrounding macroeconomic reports and ongoing disruptions following the longest U.S. government shutdown in history contribute to a cautious outlook among traders.
Fed Rate Cut Odds and Market Calibration
The predictive odds regarding Federal Reserve rate cuts have dramatically shifted. As of November 1st, the probability of no rate cut – indicated by the “yes” outcome on Myriad’s market – doubled from 31% to 62%. This significant increase reflects the evolving assessment of the economic landscape. Previously, the market anticipated a December rate cut of 25 basis points; now, the likelihood of this happening has diminished considerably. The Fed has already implemented two rate reductions, leading many to believe the conclusion of their monetary policy adjustments.
Looking Ahead: December 9th and 10th
The upcoming Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meetings on December 9th and 10th will be a critical juncture for market observers. These meetings will determine whether the Fed will proceed with a 25 basis point reduction in interest rates, or if they will maintain the current rate. The data blackout surrounding crucial economic reports further amplifies the uncertainty, as traders are acting as if a conclusion regarding future Fed actions has already been reached. The recalibration extends to rate cut odds markets, with odds of “yes” or “exactly two cuts” up 43% in the last month.
